Pavel Gomziakov was born in the city Tchaikovsky in the Ural region of Russia in 1975. He began cello studies at the age of nine. At the age of fourteen he moved to Moscow where he studied at the Gnessin School, and, later, at the Moscow State Conservatory, with Prof. Dmitri Miller. In 2000 he continued his studies with Prof. Natalia Schakhovskaya at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia, Madrid. Later he graduated from the “cycle de perfectionnement” of the Paris National Conservatory, class of Philippe Muller.

As a soloist and chamber music artist Pavel has performed throughout the world, collaborating with such artists as Eldar Nebolsin, Zakhar Bronn, Augustin Dumay, Louis Lortie, Jose-Luis Garcia, Asencio Jesus Lopez Cobos, Anthony Ros-Marba, Christopher Wareen-Green, Trevor Pinnock and many others.

In July 2007, Pavel performed with Maria Joao Pires at the Escorial Festival in Spain. This began a collaboration which saw them perform together throughout Europe, the Far East, and South America including the Theatre Champs Elysees (Paris), Victoria Hall (Geneva), Teatro Real (Madrid), Köln Philarmonie, Konzerthaus (Vienna) CCB (Lisbon) and Sumida Tryphony Hall (Tokyo). In May 2009 Deutsche Grammophon released a recording of Chopin's Cello Sonata performed by Pavel and Maria Joao Pires. The recording received a Grammy Award nomination.

In the last two seasons Pavel has performed with the New Japan Philharmonic, London Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestre National de Montpellier. In November 2008 Pavel recorded Schumann's cello concerto for Arte which was broadcast on television in Belgium, France and Germany with Orchestre de Chambre de Wallonie conducted by Augustin Dumay.

In April 2010 Pavel Gomziakov made his critically acclaimed American debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Trevor Pinnock. Pavel will return to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in June 2012 in a performance of Beethoven’s triple concerto.

In 2011 Pavel toured Japan for the second time with the Kansai Orchestra and in April 2012 Pavel will release his recording of the Saint Saens cello concerto with Augustin Dumay and the Kansai Orchestra for the Onyx label.

In July 2012 Pavel will make his debut at Valery Gergiev’s White Nights Festival in Russia.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut:

‘There was more Haydn in the form of his Cello Concerto in C major, a congenial vehicle for the exceptionally gifted young Russian cellist Pavel Gomziakov, in his U.S. debut. For these concerts his instrument is the prized "ex-Romberg" cello (made by David Tecchler in 1703) once played by Jacqueline DuPre and Lynn Harrell, on loan from Chicago's Stradivari Society. Its golden tone suited the cellist's sensitive and passionate way with Haydn. His long fingers negotiated the virtuosic finale with astonishing accuracy at breakneck speed, just as the central Adagio unfolded with the utmost grace and poise, like an instrumental aria’ - Chicago Herald Tribune

‘Pavel Gomziakov made one of the most memorable debuts of recent years and doing so with complete support and sympathy from the podium allowed him to shine even more. One can see and hear why elite pianist Maria João Pires picked Gomziakov as her partner for her recent DG recording of the Chopin cello sonata. This could be the beginning of a very serious career’ - Andrew Patner: The View from Here Reflections, reviews, and reports from the Chicago-based author, broadcaster, journalist, and arts critic
